Better Auth getSession() crashes Next.js 15 Server Components with "Cookies can only be modified" error

Better Auth's getSession() throws "Cookies can only be modified in a Server Action or Route Handler" when called from Next.js 15 Server Components (pages, layouts). The error appears intermittently — only when the session needs refreshing (controlled by updateAge config). With updateAge: 300 (5 minutes), it crashes every ~5 minutes for active users. The nextCookies() plugin does NOT cause this — it's Better Auth's core session refresh logic.

// investigation

  1. Initially suspected nextCookies() plugin — removed it. Error persisted.

  2. Dug into Better Auth v1.5.6 source at dist/api/routes/session.mjs. Found the session refresh logic (lines 219-255):

    • getSession() checks if session.expiresAt - expiresIn + updateAge <= Date.now()
    • When true, calls setSessionCookie(ctx, ...) → ctx.setSignedCookie() → cookies().set()
    • In Next.js 15, cookies().set() throws in Server Components — only allowed in Route Handlers and Server Actions

  3. Found the escape hatch at line 211: ctx.query?.disableRefresh — when truthy, getSession returns the session without attempting the cookie write.

  4. The .catch(() => null) on getSession may or may not catch this depending on how nextCookies() defers the write. In some cases the error escapes the promise chain and crashes the RSC render.

Pass query: { disableRefresh: true } to ALL auth.api.getSession() calls that run in Server Components (pages, layouts, server-side utility functions):

Leave Route Handler calls (app/api/**/route.ts) untouched — they CAN write cookies, so session refresh works there. Keep nextCookies() plugin installed — it's needed for Route Handler cookie operations and is not the cause of this bug.

Session refresh still happens during sign-in, sign-out, and any auth API calls that go through toNextJsHandler() in Route Handlers. Users won't notice — the session is still validated on every RSC render, it just doesn't extend the expiry during reads.

// verification

Added query: { disableRefresh: true } to 15 files (all Server Component getSession calls). pnpm typecheck passes. Dashboard page loads without error when logged in.
