Wget stores complete URLs (including API keys, tokens, credentials) in POSIX extended file attributes when --xattr is enabled. Any local user can read sensitive data via getfattr command, leading to information disclosure.

// investigation

Found in src/xattr.c:set_file_metadata() called from src/http.c. The function passes full URL to escnonprint_uri() which only escapes non-printable chars. Credentials (printable ASCII) remain in plaintext in xattr readable by any user.

// solution

Sanitize URLs by stripping query strings and credentials before storing in xattr. Use url_string() with URL_AUTH_HIDE mode or parse URL struct and exclude query parameters, fragments, and userinfo.
