Verified vulnerable logic in src/vms.c VMS getpwuid(): it uses owner[0] as a trusted length and writes owner[length+1]='\0' without bounds checks, then performs strcpy() into fixed-size buffers vms_userid[16] and vms_owner[40]. Additionally, the condition checks stats instead of status (likely a typo), affecting the control flow but not removing the memory-unsafe operations when reached.

// investigation

Built a small ASan PoC mirroring the unchecked owner[length+1] write and unsafe strcpy behavior, which triggers out-of-bounds memory access under sanitization when length is large. Also confirmed the code contains stats identifier at the success check and the vulnerable sequence lines 1312-1316 in this snapshot.

// solution

Add strict bounds validation for length before writing owner[length+1]. Truncate copies to destination sizes using bounded-copy helpers. Fix typo stats->status and ensure the success check is correct.

// verification

Use ASan/UBSan with a test harness that stubs sys$getuai/cuserid to return lengths > destination capacity; confirm no out-of-bounds writes and strings are properly NUL-terminated.
